Students who have taken / will take three service learning classes must fulfill the following components in order to be certified in service learning. By taking three service learning courses, students are able to waive the independent project component that is required of students with only one service learning course. They are also able to send in reflection work completed in class rather that attending reflection sessions.
First, fill out and send to the Center for Service Learning (csl@ku.edu):
Classroom experience emphasizes academic coursework that involves service learning as a method of engaging the course material. Students must complete the service in a service learning course. *Note: Students may have taken a service-learning class that is not included on this list. Please suggest any course to the Center for Service Learning that you feel should be included on the list. The Center will then seek approval to have the class added to the list.
Directed Readings focus on basic knowledge of the principles of service learning and community engagement. The Center for Service Learning assigns a set of directed readings that address principles of service learning. These readings include 3-5 articles or book chapters.
NOTICE: Students must complete reading reflection questions and send them to the Center for Service Learning.
As verification of your experiences in class with reflection, please email a completed assignment from one of your service learning classes that included elements of reflection. For example, an elibigle assignment could be a paper, journal entries, or blogs that discussed your experience with service and how it affected you. Alternatively, you may respond to several reflection questions instead of sending in an assignment.
Email a reflection assignment or complete reflection questions
