Getting certified with one service learning course

There are four components required to earn certification if you have taken or will take one service learning class. The four components, described below, can be completed in almost any order, as long as the reflection sessions are finished last.

First, fill out and send to the Center for Service Learning (csl@ku.edu):

The Four Components of Certification

Component 1: Classroom Experience

Classroom experience emphasizes academic coursework that involves service learning as a method of engaging the course material. Students must complete the service in a service learning course.  *Note:  Students may have taken a service-learning class that is not included on this list. Please suggest any course to the Center for Service Learning that you feel should be included on the list.  The Center will then seek approval to have the class added to the list.

Pre-approved service-learning classes

Component 2: Independent Project

The Independent Project emphasizes the application of principles of service learning to a project initiated by the student independently. Students may complete the Independent Project in several ways:

• by completing the service in a second service learning course
• by participating in an alternative break or mission trip,
• by volunteering at a local community agency
OR

• by serving as a leader in a student group.

Contact us with questions or to discuss other options for completing the Independent Project.

Documentation of Student Participation Form should be submitted to the Center upon completion of the Independent Project

Component 3: Directed Readings

Directed Readings focus on basic knowledge of the principles of service learning and community engagement. The Center for Service Learning assigns a set of directed readings that address principles of service learning. These readings include 3-5 articles or book chapters.

NOTICE: Students must complete reading reflection questions and send them to the Center for Service Learning or bring them to their first reflection session.
